I think this is about being depressed. Generally depressed people are distant, isolate themselves, suffer from insomnia or like to sleep a lot .

When I was depressed music was my best friend.
People probably think he is stoned. Because just lays about doing nothing. But he thinks he might need some drugs. Maybe for the depression. I don't know if he thinks he needs legit anti depressants or he just wants to escape with recreational drugs. But all he can do is sleep it away. I don't understand the I have my own kind of protein lyric.
