To me, this song is about the beauty of restraint (see Lost in Translation). An April/August relationship,... a vibrant, capable 24-year-old woman launching her life,... a primed 49-year-old man taking professional and personal risk,... by some standards she could be viewed as the sweetest kill,... but out of love,... or fear,... or respect,... he didn't act on his impulse despite his raging desire. Their draw towards one another wasn't consummated,...so was it just for show? The meaning was complicated for both and the instinct for both was to flee. But neither was willing to go. They shared true intimacy,... a beautiful connection,... holding hands,.. a kiss. She was special,... hurt or mysteriously fragile to him. Still, they both questioned whether the magnetic draw was toward one another or away from something else. Even their trusted friends said to each separately, what are you doing? (i.e., put you down, wear you out),... But they both couldn't help but feel the way they felt. Neither wanted the luck to play out. And, while that they were trying to figure it out and not hurt one another, time was slipping by,... Fading out! The highs were higher than expected. It felt selfish, if not idiotic, for both of them. And, equally, they both knew that all the time, they were just getting by, trying to figure out their lives. And he was asking her and himself the question to which, sadly, he already knew the answer: "Can I break you through this world?" Sometimes real love requires a "no",... or at least a "not yet."
