(Switchfoot is a Christan band, keep that in mind)
Love, real, true love, is only possible through Jesus. Through his love we are supposed to model all kinds of relationships, platonic and romantic.
So one important thing to ask yourself before you enter a relationship (especially romantic) is wether or not you are ready/mature enough to love someone with Jesus' perfect love. Now of course, we are human and perfect is impossible for us to attain. But we are compelled to try.
In this song, this guy is a "wandering soul" who has "mountains to climb on his own". This whole song its obvious he has feeling for the girl he's talking about, but based on true love, he wants her to wait for him... till he's ready... and to do that she has to let him go.
But at the same time he wants her to know he is falling for her.
Like normal humans in love, they want to be together. But in the name of his true love they are both thinking about what's best for each other. One of the highest act s of love is giving someone the oppertunity to reject you. Which is why the singer is asking, "Do you love me enough to let me go?"
I might be overthinking things, but here it goes.
