To me, this song is a memory.
Basically, I interpret it to be a girl looking back at her past and reliving all of her choices, whether they were good or bad.
"Well I knew what I didn't want to know,
And I saw where I didn't want to go,
So I took the path less travelled on,
And I'll let my stories be whispered when I'm gone,"
The first verse tells us that she knew things she didn't need or want to know and she could clearly see the way she wanted to go in life, as well as the life she didn't want. It tells us that she took a risk, which could have been quite controversial and a subject of gossip and discussion.
"Well in this life you must find something to live for,
'Cause when the darkness comes a-calling,
You'll go back to where you were before,
'Cause this life is as fragile as a dream,
And nothing's ever really as it seems,"
The second verse suggests that she is determined to find a purpose in life, because if something goes wrong, you'll be back to square one. If you don't have a purpose, you won't know where to start over. It indicates the she is aware of the fragility of life - something that takes a lifetime to build, but only takes a second to destroy - and you never know what life really is, or what it's about - you never know what you have until it's gone.
"Well I lost my innocence when in I let him dive,
But the way that he looked at me,
Made me feel alive,
And now I know nothing at all,
But the release that come when you're in midfall"
To me, this third verse is about coming of age. She lost her virginity, or innocence, and regrets it, but at the time she didn't regret anything because he made her feel special and alive. But she now realises that she wasted her adolescence with him and the only thing she knows is that, even though she was falling from grace, there was some strange kind of relief that came with the fall.
