To me, this song is about a guy who is stuck between 2 major viewpoints on sexuality: 1) being promiscuous, and having 1 night stands and 2) only sleeping with someone you deeply care about. The songs first verse says this with

I would say that he has previously been in a couple relationships where he cared for the other person, but things just didn't work out, maybe because he was just being an idiot
