To me, this song is about a guy who is stuck between 2 major viewpoints on sexuality: 1) being promiscuous, and having 1 night stands and 2) only sleeping with someone you deeply care about. The songs first verse says this with "Yea, I used to give a damn, I used to try real hard, But I'll give in tonight, chances are"

I would say that he has previously been in a couple relationships where he cared for the other person, but things just didn't work out, maybe because he was just being an idiot "I'm not worse love this making I'm better at the breakin' A guy like me knows how to disappear"

In the course, he is saying how, in his emotionally damaged condition, he is going to probably "go to far" one way or the other. That is, he may just break down emotionally, and thus, be going "away from [her]", OR he may try to hard, drink too much, and once again, end up going "away from [her]".

"One foot on the narrow way, one foot on the ledge" This line refers to the narrow way being that of someone only sleeping with someone they care about because the path really is a "narrow" one when you think about it, and there're plenty of ways to steer off from "what the good book says". "the ledge" refers to the jump into the promiscuous ways of sexuality and listening to "the Devil's lies".

In the final verse, he states how they will "see if [they] can fill an empty hard' But he ends with "but I wont tell you what the chances are", reassuring the fact that he's probably already been in a couple relationships that haven't worked out and is very pessimistic about finally finding one which will really "fill [his] empty heart".
