The phrase "wine and roses" comes from the poem Vitae Summa Brevis Spem Nos Vetat Incohare Longam by Ernest Dowson ("They are not long, the days of wine and roses \ Out of a misty dream \ Our path emerges for a while, then closes \ Within a dream"). Although slowgoins might be right that it is used here as a reference to the movie The Days of Wine and Roses. In any event, both the poem and the theme song from the movie are about how life is a very brief event and it should be enjoyed while it lasts.

We don't cry for those nights to arrive We yell like hell to the heavens
