i read this book calles Peony in love by lisa see which made this song very clear to me from the beginning. In china, if a widower gets married, his second wife is a sister wife of his first. The second wife prays and does rituals to be on good terms with her sister wife so the first wofe's soul doesnt "haunt" her or torment her. because whatever the second wife does with the husband the first (sister) wife also experiences it.
