This song seems like the perfect soundtrack for Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. The wife, Nora, decides to leave her husband for a number of reasons, and I have pulled several quotes from Act III that I believe allude to her reasons:
‘I must stand quite alone, if I am to understand myself and everything about me.’
‘You have never loved me. You have only thought it pleasant to be in love with me.’
‘I have existed merely to perform tricks for you’
‘I believe that before all else I am a reasonable human being’
There are also several quotes from that final act that say almost exactly what is said in some of these lyrics:
‘I am going away from here now’ sounds like “I have decided to leave you forever”.
‘I cannot spend the night in a strange man's room’ sounds like “I have decided to leave you forever”.
‘I do not exactly know what religion is’ alludes to “has anyone looked lovely?”.
‘I have other duties just as sacred’ alludes to “And it’s fine for some”.
‘Both you and I would have to be so changed’ is similar to “Thunder and lightning won’t change what I’m feeling”.
Both the song and the play instill in me the idea that these woman have found a logical justification to leave in accordance with natural laws and a duty to themselves.
