Neil Peart and Ayn Rand have it right. Selfishness, an animal instinct/emotion, promotes self preservation. Without it we would cease to exist, that's why socialism tends to not work. Ultimately, take care of your self first then you will be able take care of the needy ("Begging Hands and Bleeding Hearts..") so hopefully they can get back to taking care of themselves (...will only cry out for more).
