I believe this song is about a guy who has recently broken up with a girl, and goes on a night out in the city, maybe to a club or whatever, in order to forget about her, but it's not so easy. The City and the Ghost, the ghost being the ex.

"Tonight I need the bright lights, Still got her face on my mind. Heading where the talk is cheap and I'm dressed to a "t" so they won't notice me. "

He still misses her, but is heading out to the city to party

"It's warm for October and I've got the windows down. The skyline whispers her promises, the same lie each night. "

He sees the skyline up ahead on his way out, but still can't forget her broken promises, maybe of being together forever or some other generic relationship shiznizz

"But I force myself to believe...

And I swore it'd be different but how could it be? What I came to escape is right here inside of me. "

He thought he could get away from his feelings, but realizes that he can't just shake them off so easily

"The city's a desert with photographic stars. Each pretty face is just a mirage, and my mouth's full of sand again. "

Basically, he's going out and getting with chicks, making out with them and whatnot, and thought they may be attractive, it's all pretty faux and meaningless.

"I look in the mirror past the buildings, the sky's getting light. Another piece of my innocence is the admission I paid there tonight. Slow down past her exit though it makes me sick, and I imagine her saying, "You're better than this... you're better than this." "

He's on his way back home, out so late partying that it's almost light, But on his way past her exit he's reminded of her, and what she would think of him now if she knew. Perhaps he even brought a chick back with him, hence losing another piece of his 'innocence'

Anyway, that's my take on it, reminds me of a situation I went through myself. if you guys at BEDlight ever check this be sure to let me know if I got it ;)
