This song is about peoples beliefs in items/religion. The song talks about what an individual thinks he should do with his life.

"What I should do with my life How I should spend my time I'll be a stock broker and get me a wife"

This is the first verse that brings me to believe that this song is about how people put value to things that do not necessarily exist. As a stockbroker he essentially has a job looking after virtual assets that have no real monetary gain; unless they are credited by others in what they believe to be the value of stock.

The next line states that he will get a diamond to get a wife, which for some reason society believes they are a girls best friend, however it is just a rock. another reference in how people give value to items for no apparent reason.

The chorus I believe is a reference to how things can quickly change, as the lights turning on abruptly in the night would shock anyone.

"And then the lights came on In the middle of the night"

This is a simple phrase that everyone can relate to. The song ends saying that when the money is all gone and spent what else is there? We end up with nothing because we put our values in the wrong things; money is now essentially credit which does not have any real value unless you give it value. We put people and items on pedestals that should not be there; referring to the first verse in the song; and eventually leading up to the subject of how we as people see one race as superior to another.

As for this line: "There'll be a place for us in heaven's gate Waiting for us on lay away"

I feel it is a reference to how we as people put too much value in money, so we can never find a true happiness because we will never fully be able to "afford" what we believe to be happiness
