A tragic song about the dangers of attempting to live in a sentimentalized past that if indulged will lead to crippling despair.

The refrain: " It was great, so great Young and innocent days" is ironic. If you attempt to capture these "soft white dreams, sugar coated outside" and live as if they are reality, you will end up in utter despair.

The music is deeply melancholic and underlines the great danger of becoming drugged and incapacitated by memory. A very beautiful song, that I'm sure arose from the depths of Ray Davies psyche.
