I would say that the feel I get from this song is one of desperation to get away from everything and everyone but his love interest. It sounds like emotionally, they may be having a hard time connecting ('Am I reaching you?') and the narrator is afraid that his love interest is going to realize that they haven't been able to reach each other for sometime and that she is going to leave him ('One day you're going to leave this shell...').
