Lyrically, I don't think this song means much of anything. I believe Westerberg has commented on several occasions that he keeps a notebook and frequently fills it with lyric ideas and fragments, then pulls these out to work on them when he has song ideas. But this seems even less developed than many of his other lyrics - listening to the song, it seems he was just making up words on the spot that sounded OK and could rhyme reasonably well. The only possible exception to my ears is in the chorus, where he "give[s] the world the slip," a theme consistent with his tendency to be low-profile and somewhat introverted.
