After having watched the video for this sing, the meaning seems very clear to me. The video opens up with a baby being admired by his parents and drawing in a completely white room. He has a half dollar coin, likely minted the year of his birth, this is a symbol. He celebrates his birthday, plays with toys, he seems like a perfectly normal and happy child.
Then we see his father begin drinking and yelling at him and he runs away, only to find his mother yelling at him. He gets a little bit older and the abuse continues, he now is drawing dark lines and using spray paint in the white room where the innocent child drew pictures. He sits on a rock and holds the coin in his hand
As he grows older, we find him in his late or early twenties. He has a girlfriend now and they get married. He continues to paint in dark lines. For the first time now, we see him drinking. the next scene he is in an argument with his wife, lightly shoving her. When in shows him in the painting room he is distraught, sad and angry with his painting.
Next we find the boy, now a man, walking away from him home in cammies. He in shipped off to combat, he receives letters from his wife as one would expect. While there, we see him shoot a man dead with his rifle, and he instantly has a terrified look as if to say "What have I done?". There is more painting in the room, but this time it is dark thick marks made with a paintbrush, he is no longer painting anything specific, just dark marks. He looks over his dead friends.
He returns home from war and we see he and his wife having a BBQ with some friends, he seems zoned out. He continues to drink. in the next scene there is a woman walking away with suitcases, presumably his wife. He now is taking a hammer to all his childhood mementos, wedding mementos and alcohol. He is screaming and the video flashes between him screaming and his dad screaming. He is now just throwing black paint on the walls of the white room
Now we find him laying in a hospital bed, hood up to IV and EKG. He flat lines and we see the coin fall out of his hand. End of video.
Judging by this it seems that a boy is born, he is abused by his parents. Because of this, he grows up like his father did. Once he realizes he has grown up to be what he hated, he tries to fix it but it is too late. He dies lonely.
The coin is a symbol for his troubles. He was given the coin as a boy and was abused as a boy. He hung on to both of these things until he died, he dropped the coin symbolically letting go of his problems, it took death to free him.
Please feel free to correct me if you interpret differently.
I forgot to add, a man comes by and picks up the coin and takes it away. suddenly his EKG springs back to life and we see the baby boy in a pure white room again. Powerful stuff.

@chriscolwx I agree with everything you say...however I did not watch the video and got a bit of a different story. Let me start with the chorus "if I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain." With that said, like most times rain is symbolized as sadness or depression. So with him holding back the rain he is essentially stopping the depression he has caused to his family, who he apologized to in the beginning. So he is very sorry and wants everyone to forget what he has done even though it my be tough to forget...

To end he want to restart with his family and be there for them when he wasn't. (I know that was very vague but I tried to get the point across quick to avoid from typing up a five paragraph essay like I was tought by my English teacher Mr.Carr who I absolutely hated in the beginning of the year but learned to love and respect him as the great teacher he always was and will be.)
