Not 100% true , sully made fun of a guy who had a cold sore on his lip , the next day sully had one himself and a friend said looks like god smacked your face for making fun and the name stuck, they were aware of the AiC song Godsmack but they still liked it and went along with it

AiC and Godsmack are totally related. on Smack This! when asked about the band name they said they stole it from AiC. shrug end of story.
each band is brilliant in their own right. two of my all-time favourites.
