As a DD fan, I've always felt this song was about being forced to be outgoing and public when you'd really rather stay inside and be creative. When I was in my teens and first became a Durannie, that was my take. Now, as an adult, I think the song is still about exactly that, but with the added bonus that once he got out of the house and went to "whatever the party was", Simon encountered a stunning woman and realized that emerging in public and attending this party was actually A VERY GOOD THING. :)
This woman is the "something" that he's just found "on my mind, breaking open doors he'd sealed up before".
I've certainly had nights of a head full of chopstick and not liking it... then forcing myself to be social and suddenly meeting That Person, and being very, very glad I came. That's what I think this song's about.
