This song defines my life. Spent high school and college stoned. My professional career has been pretty uninspiring due to various addictions. I'm fat. I've squandered most of my resources. And now I'm almost 40. The funny thing is I must have listened to this song 500 times in high school (usually with a bong in my hand), but I never bothered to figure out the lyrics. I understand them now. However, there is one lyric that doesn't go with my life - not having enough time anymore. I have too much time. That's what happens when you're isolated.
Can anyone speculate what the last four verses mean?
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.
Hi,
I think that the last four verses are about death, concretely, the following:
Hi,
I think that the last four verses are about death, concretely, the following:
Far away across the field (In place far beyond Earth - the 'road' to Heaven)
The tolling of the iron bell (The bell represents a call to Heaven as a symbol that your time has come- to an end)
Calls the faithful to their knees (A call only for the faithful that now have to get to their knees in front of God)
The hear the softly spoken magic spells (The voice of God and whatever he has got to tell you)
Far away across the field (In place far beyond Earth - the 'road' to Heaven)

Calls the faithful to their knees (A call only for the faithful that now have to get to their knees in front of God)
The hear the softly spoken magic spells (The voice of God and whatever he has got to tell you)
This is what I...
This is what I think the last four verses mean, however, it's all about your own interpretation of the lyrics. Hope it helps ;-)
