The album 16 Lovers Lane is basically following the course of a relationship from beginning to end.
'I'm Alright' to me seems to be about a period when a relationship has ended but for some reason (perhaps for friendship or because it's unavoidable) the two people keep seeing each other. The narrator is obviously sad and angry about the breakup and hasn't yet got over it, it is still a 'hundred weight'. Despite this, he keeps on telling himself (and maybe the person he has split from and others) that he is 'alright'.
Most of the songs on the album are about Amanda Brown (her and Grant McLennan were in a relationship for many years). This song is perhaps reflecting Grant's position after the break-up because they are still in a band together ('I can see her during the day').
