I think this really fits a guy who has had a rather-empty life and had filled it with violent, destructive behavior, but that he also had formed a family with people who really care about it; but I also think the guy had chosen drugs or something life-threatening that had his days numbered.
"you were my fire, so i burned, 'til there was nothing left of me" could fit both sides of his life, the good and the bad, because the bad choice of lifestyle pretty much spear-headed him to an early grave but because he actually had people who loved him it was harder to give his all when he would fight.
"why give me hope then give me up just to be the death of me" would be him talking to life; maybe he was finally given all that he had needed in life but it obviously was given to him too late.
the chorus makes me think that he has no choice but to sit back and watch the life that he had needed all along and do nothing about it, sort of the "take your medicine" scenario, and that in a weird way he just wants the "needed life" to just leave him so he can't feel anymore pain.
"we never made it, you hesitated" sounds as though he tried to make good terms with his life but in spite of his struggle he got himself killed ("you [life] hesitated").
the rest of the song I think would fit him after death, how even though his soul was still earthbound that he wouldn't be able to enjoy what he had left behind like he would have been able to if he were still alive.
"you were my fire, so I burned, now there's nothing left of me" would be him summing up what his life had been and done to him, and the "there's nothing left of me" would declare that he had died.
just my take on it. probably my favorite stone sour song.
