Good interpretations everyone, but this song is bitter sweet for me because it's about our past relationship. Anna and I dated in college briefly before she left to pursue music, and I decided to finish college. I recognize all of these metaphors she uses in the song such as "Fort Bliss"; no, I was not in the military, it was from a sign that was above the doorway in our apartment that read "Welcome to Fort Bliss" that I believe we got at Bed Bath and Beyond from my parents. The opening verse was actually a real call she got one night ( I remember it wasn't near 2am, more on that in a minute) that her best friend and her bf broke off her engagement.
The '2am' she keeps referring to in this song is from an unfinished song I wrote. The part I wrote? verse: "2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song..." I wrote that in the back of my english 1a notebook while doing an essay at around 2 in the morning, hence why I named it 2am. She loved it so much, grabbed her guitar and was picking out the chords for it; me being a Beatles fan I suggested a minor chord on the 'low' parts of the verse. For example Dm on the part "it's no longer inside of me..".
This song came out awhile after we broke up, but it gives me goosebumps every-time I hear it. Although I can't help to smile a bit when 'my part' comes up because she did it beautifully. Maybe if she is humble enough, Anna would call me up since my number hasn't changed since and we can duet.
