Fascinating song. It's always a challenge to figure out what Mr. Simon is trying to tell us. He is so darned good.
I took this song as saying that God and love are essential to life, but that there are times when we have to "do it ourselves." The Earth Becomes a Farm verse gives us a quick view of the history of mankind, and leaves us with the admonition that we have to do the right thing. The drop in his voice in the Big Bang verse and Love Me verse is quite effective. I debated whether the voice was supposed to represent God or Satan, but came away thinking he meant God.
Love the line about Big Bang being a joke he made up. Then the verse about sometime you just have to fly down that highway hits us. I took that as meaning the highway of life, and I took it that he's saying that even if God loves us, we have to go down the highway of life by making our own decisions.
Nice shot at how AM radio has gone to talk only, and then a shot at gospel shows and how they do NOT replace the real God. Again, he SEEMS to be saying how important God and love are, but then adding that we have to take responsibility for what happens in our lives. ... I could be totally wrong, but that's what I see.
