The song contrasts (in general) the way love used to be in the old days. Much more fidelity, one to one lasting relationships. True love and faithfulness. The character is a 'Jack the lad,' moving from one girl to the next without real commitment, love. He also compares modern love with 'the fleshpots' i.e. escorts/prostitution world where sex is paid for. Then he meets someone he truly loves and wants to commit (be 'one true heart) but she is very wary of the way men are and might well not trust and walk out the door at any moment. Now he truly has met someone he wants to love and he fears it is not going to happen.
