to me this is a song about permanently losing someone that you possibly could have saved; even if it wasn't your fault that the person had died you feel culpable anyway. the guilt eats away at you and even though you still have dreams about them, you think you're only remembering them because of the guilt, nothing else, and it really tears you down, wishing to be "set free".
