This is a great Tonic song, deffinately one of my favorites. Emerson Hart is a fantastic songwriter, and he always connects his lyrics to his music so well. According to interviews, Emersons father was a Schizophrenic and went on and off medication. He had violent outbursts, and once pulled a gun on Emerson and his mother and in 1980 he disapeared and was never seen again. I think Emerson would of only been like 11 or 12 at the time. They do not have a death certificate, though he hasnt been seen since january 1980 and he was presumed murdered. There are references to his dad in other of his solo songs (Not with Tonic). This is just about loosing his father I think, and the mixed feelings that has come with it. He has also said in interviews that when he went to accept an award on stage for 'If You Could Only See' he couldn't stop looking for his fathers face in the crowd, even though he knew he wouldn't be there. In his mind the search is still on, and that is why the lyrics say; "Could have been enough to try Without making a sound It's all part of the plan, my dear"
