I think I remember that Brandon Flowers said in an interview that he's just singing about his life and that his grandma's actually called Dixie and his brother was born on the 4th of July.
(Love that line because my best friend was born on the 4th as well...)
Well, for me this song's about living in a small town where nobody ever tried to achieve something. And that people keep saying that you can't make it and keep gossiping about you because that's really what a small town is about. (Believe me, I live there.)
But otherwise he loves his home because it's the place where all his childhood memories are settled (Grandma Dixie, Birthdaycake, ...). And due to the fact that he has this home behind him he can make it out there as long as he can return.
I think the line "I see London I see Sam's Town" means that he saw bigger cities now, like London, but still likes his small hometown "Sam's Town".
That's what I think because it's exactly how I feel. Living in a small town that you have to leave to make it somewhere but actually you really do not want to leave everything behind because apart from the gossip you love that place and the people there. And sometimes you feel like it's better that people know who you are and talk about you rather than living your live anonymous.
Sorry for every grammar and spelling mistake! I'm certainly not American or English (though I maybe would like that!) and my English is not as fluent as I want it to be :)
