To me, this song is about a long-distance relationship. As, I used this song to relate to my own long-distance relationship. Gary, I think, had a girl of interest from Chicago, and it makes sense since he refers to "north-west skies." I don't want to say she's cheating on him, but someone else is definitely involved, and 'Gary' is being lied to and losing. He's saying it would be nice if the papers said for once, "he is mine" referring to himself. While being away from Chicago, he wants her to know that they 'share the same skies' no matter where they are. But, in this losing battle, feeling anxious and jealous and with no hope of winning the girl he "concedes" Even though how much he cared for her so much that he was nervous around her. Most people don't understand when someone is nervous around you, it means they like you, and I'm guessing she didn't either. Good ol' unrequited love.
