I see it as a conflict between the narrator and the man inside his mind, with the first verse from the perspective of the narrator and the second from the man in his mind.
The man in his mind has great ideas about all the things he wants to accomplish, and the narrator thinks of him as kind of a nagging presence because it makes him get out of his comfort zone and pushes him to do the things he knows he should do but doesn't want to give the effort for.
The man in his mind thinks of the original narrator as a coward that always shoots down his ideas and holds him back from all of the great things that can be accomplished. He says if he doesn't step in and make the narrator do things, then he's just gonna sit around and waste the day
I relate to that situation very well, as I imagine many would. I'm loving the song and the album. All hail Streetlight!
