If You Were A Stone Lyrics

I had to interpret this song for an english task, so this is just what I think :)

“If you were a stone, then I’d be the rain” He is saying that even though they aren’t the same any more (they aren’t both stones) that he will still be there, even if she doesn’t notice him, even if they are no longer together and even if they are no longer the same people as they used to be. “Turn you to sand, as the time slips away” So he is wearing away from her memory. She is turning from a stone into sand, so she is turning into a different person, without him, and therefore slipping away.

“If you were a tree then I’d be the Earth, clutching your roots, as you reach skyward” He is saying that she will continue to grow, maybe even away from him, but he will be clutching her for support, and he will always be there.

“I am a metaphor for all the things I couldn’t say” He is saying that he is this way, because of how he has felt, and he is the reason this has happened, because he never shared his true emotions.

“It’s never easy, then it hurts” He is saying that it wasn’t easy when they first fell apart, and that by itself was hard, but then the pain comes with time.

“Like scratching diamonds, I have tried to find my way to you” The only thing that scratches diamonds is other diamonds, and diamonds are rare. He is saying that he has tried to find others like her, but it is impossible because no one is like her. But it is also impossible for them to be together again, because they are moving away from one another. “But we’re both moving in reverse” They are moving away from each other, moving backwards to the way they were before. So he can’t find his way back to her no matter how hard he tries.

“I wish that we could both find a simple way just to make it by, but right now I’m alright if you’re just fine” He is saying that he wishes that there could be an easier way for this to work, an easier way to forget so they can both move on. He is feeling the pain, but she is fine, and that is what keeps him going.

“Some nights you’re a photograph fading in my memory” They have been apart so long that he finds it hard to remember her clearly, but yet she still lingers on his mind continually. “Some days I feel you on my skin” Some days he remembers her so well that it feels like she is still there, and that she is still a part of him.

“We’re trading silence, there are words that seem to steal our breath” Instead of trading conversation, they can no longer bring themselves to talk to each other. They are afraid of the things they might say, things that they cannot say, and therefore steal their breath away. “And I just dream about your lips” He is saying he still thinks about the conversations they held, and he remembers when they were in silence, unable to speak to one another. He thinks of the things she might have wanted to say, the things she was thinking.

“We’d count the stars, my hands in your leaves” He is telling her what could have been, counting the stars- there are billions of stars, they could have been together forever. And by leaves, instead of being the roots, as said in a previous line of the song, he would be right next to her, and he wouldn’t have to be away from her, they would be together. “And I’d hold my breath, until we both fell asleep” By holding his breath, he is saying he would do anything for her, he would risk anything to be with her, until they died- fell asleep.
