From my experience I think this song talks about a guy who is in love with two different people. The first girl he has an "instant crush" on and they give it all they've got... but it still falls apart ("it's all we can take").
Then, as a negative coping mechanism from the first girl, the guy decides to play it safe and starts to see a girl friend who always liked him and he knows it can work out easily ("chained myself to a friend").
But he will always have feelings for the first girl, even though they're not together and he knows he chose to walk away from the passionate relationship ("I don't want to anymore").
This guy is the real loser in the story because the first girl has a new guy who basically kisses the ground she walks on ("his lips on the ground") and he doesn't want to believe the reality they've created.
They can't ever be together again and don't see each other around but they both secretly wish it hadn't turned out that way.
"And we will never be alone again/ 'cause it doesn't happen everyday/kinda counted on you being a friend/Can I give it up or give it away?"
