I believe the title is referencing the story from the Old Testament of Lot and his family. In the story, angels visit the city of Sodom on a mission to destroy it (as God deems it to be an irredemable city of sin). The angels gather Lot and his family, who are deemed to be worth saving, and tell them what is about to happen. They warn them that they are to flee the city and are not to look back. But Lot's wife does look back as they flee, and is immediately turned into a pillar of salt.

The song similarly seems to be about living with the guilt of leaving behind the people you can't save or (in the instance of this song) perhaps the guilt of never really trying to save them. Never probing deeper.

My Interpretation

I think it might closer to latter and not any Bible reference. Salt is a symbol of purification in a lot of things. Anyway, I'd think it's about feeling bad for not trying harder to work out problems in a relationship and just running away. Lyrics mention different interests, crying and ignoring (watching tv instead), being mad about guessing what the other person is thinking etc. Slowly they drift apart (maybe even an affair is hinted in the last verse). So the person hurts the one they loved and feel guilt so much they should live in salt to be clean...

Spot on about the Lot reference

I also think it's a Biblical reference. Living in salt and leaving you behind in the same line is too much of a coincidence. I'm sure there is a double-meaning of cleansing and preservation. I am also hearing a lot of people mentioning that this is a reference to his brother. Great song, great album.
