Haven't heard this song, but I bet it's about how being "in love" is like being asleep, in a metaphorical sense, as in being unaware of what's really happening. Love isn't blind, it's blinding. You're in love and everything seems to be going fine until one day you "wake up" and she's gone and took the love with her. Then you hit the "ground" of reality as you come crashing back into it. Your love, hope, happiness all "appear missing" and for so long now you've identified yourself, defined yourself by these emotions/feelings, therefore you "appear missing" as well. The old happy-in-love-you. In this song it seems as though the protagonist has "been there before," but is falling in love again and is afraid, and wants someone to "wake him up" so he doesn't fall victim to the same illusions as last time.

@Androgyne Listen to it!! It's one of QOTSA's best songs!!
