Do For the Others Lyrics

I've pondered over the meaning of this song since the album came out. I actually ran into Stephen Stills at an environmental conference in LA back in the early 90's but didn't have the huevos to ask him about this song.

So I'm left with a basic interpretation. I think this is about a man who lost his girl and ended up kidnapping some dudes related to her (borrowing the lives of his brothers, "his" in a universal sense of brotherhood).

He gets arrested and put in jail where he has lots of time to ponder his misery and is left with his guitar while he spends his time paying his just dues to the public "for the others."

I would love to hear from someone who might have a less ominous impression of this beautiful, but nevertheless, haunting song.

My Interpretation

@Tymochtee It's about David Crosby coping with losing his fiancee in a car crash by being a better friend. That's the official explanation.
