Hold On Lyrics

the song seems to center around two people who are (or were) fairly close to one another, not necessarily in a relationship but maybe. the narrator seems to really care about the other person, perhaps more than what is reciprocated

the person opposite the narrator of the song, the antagonist (?), clearly did something that completely changed him/her ("What you've done you can't keep inside… 'Cause I can see you're not being yourself… 'Cause usually you're down for it… Whatever you've done, however bad…")

the antagonist is acting completely opposite of the norm, being unpredictable. the narrator asked to him/her to come over (presumably to have the antagonist explain what happened to him/her) but he/she refuses. the narrator's surprise at this rejection suggests that the antagonist is in their company quite often ("… what do you mean you're not coming by?"). the antagonist then shows up inexplicably ("I called you later & you were outside"), adding to his/her unpredictability & perhaps suggesting that he/she decided to come over to confide in the narrator but changed his/her mind at the last minute. for whatever reason, the antagonist cannot open up emotionally to the narrator, even when they are together ("You're giving me the coldest stare/Like you don't even know I'm here"). the antagonist won't even allow the narrator to speak about what happened or to try to help him/her ("Why don't you let me sing?"). the narrator is desperate to get through, even suggesting they just forget about whatever happened altogether & start over ("Why don't we turn the leaf?") but clearly to no avail

quite simply the song is about two people growing apart, or rather one growing away from the other. it's unclear as to whether this is due to some type of traumatic event that happened to the antagonist or if the narrator doesn't want to let this person go & is just being dramatic about their crumbling relationship. by the end of the song, the increasing repetition ("Whatever you've done, however bad, hold on, hold on, hold on") suggests that the narrator is running out of things to do/say. the incomplete lines at the very end ("Why don't… why don't…") suggest that the narrator is finally giving up & letting this person walk out of his/her life
