When I was little I thought it was about a guy who was like having a life crisis or something and went off (I got a lot of outdoorsy/time passing imagery in the beginning, I imagined him hiking out alone, the sun and temperatures/colors) to discover himself and his purpose in life, and then he missed his friends and family so he came home, having realized that they were his purpose in life.
Now, I'm thinking the horses/wings/spirits stuff is about death. He's in mourning because all the people close to him seem to be dying or drifting away and he feels alone because of this, and he wants to be with them (dead), but he eventually accepts that the one who died (some lady he loved?) has passed on and is an angel, ala a spirit who'll watch over him to make him feel less alone?
This is definitely the vaguest Smash Mouth song. I'm glad to see so many other people enjoy this. Very intense.
