Lyric discussion by HitTheHigh

I think the song is about what separates real love from the earlier stages of excitement and sexuality. Things start out very new and fun, but what really lies behind that is not always certain. So, in this song, Ferry phrases the move from one state to the other as an important moment of learning about himself and the other person. By the end of the song, maybe he has learned something.

I don't think the song is a sad one, though. I think that what the speaker is getting at is that, while we can lose track of it at times, love is the only thing there is. You can get in your own way with ego, self-defensiveness, judgement etc. but in the end, there is nothing more important than the love you share with someone. I think he is asking the implied audience to tell him one thing in the world that is really more important than the love they have; the answer is that there isn't anything.

This is a very complex song but it is an absolutely beautiful one as well.
