The song title "Midnight Sun", to me, represents a theme of contradiction. In my opinion, many of the lyrics aim towards that idea - there seems to be a reoccurring theme of opposite ideals: agony/sanctuary, friendly face/fiery grimace, bright of days/jaws of darkness.. you get the point. The initial lyrics
"Tried so hard to understand all of your feelings
Tried to cope with your insanities
Come to think about too many ways of healing
What we lost or maybe never had"
give me the impression that this was written with specificity in mind - perhaps a relationship or more vaguely, a person just in general.
In terms of how I personally relate to it, the lyrics remind me of a relationship with someone who's words/actions(?) are contradictory to what they otherwise are displaying. There is care and concern from the point of view of the lyrics for this particular person, but eventually, perhaps, "fate" dictates a different "way" and there is a feeling of accepting a separation.
For me personally, I've related it to a close, personal relationship. One in which I've felt things the other has not - despite their words and actions, I am not what I wish to be in this person's eyes; I am smaller than they are to me - Assumed to be "friends" rather than something more. Such strong feelings and contradictory from the other end can result in very passionate, yet mixed and compassion - a thin line between love and hate... or perhaps resentment in lighter terms. The "back and forth" or contradictory of emotions eventually leads oneself to accepting that one has to move on, despite the pain and resentment, or else realize continuation may result in self destruction.
"Friendly face turns into a fiery grimace
Suddenly feelings learn to die
Used up sympathy no chance to return
To a world one knew but wounds that will burn"
However, such feelings do not wither or just disappear... scars remain. There is question and wonder where such things will lead in the future; is there room to go back? A place to change things? And we still wonder the answers on the correct path to take.
"Still aware of what else has gone
Agonized and hypnotized
When will I be shown the way?"
... and eventually, we find those answers (maybe to some degree), and all past digressions and occurrences seem respectfully clear.
"Fell asleep and no midnight sun
Still aware justice has been done
No more doubts but disbelief
When the night was day
Celebration, miracle
And fate did show the way"
