At first I thought this was a breakup song, but after listening to it again for the first time in over a year I think I finally understand what it means.
The girl is leaving to see the world and to understand who she is and what her part is in the grand scheme of things. They love each other, and there's this hope that she'll return to him in the end after her life changing journey. Yet they both know that this very well might not be the case. Things can change while she's gone. Yet the girl is longing for something more in her life, so she leaves him in search of herself. He is supportive in her decision because he loves her and he knows that she needs this.
Girl: There's no need for big plans
Boy: I'll be here when you're ready
She's saying that she doesn't want to make this an absolute goodbye. There's no need to plan her life out, anything could happen. He's saying that whatever happens he'll be there for her when she returns.
I think this interpretation is a LOT more beautiful and meaningful than just perceiving it as a breakup song. So this is certainly the meaning I'll choose to listen to it through.
