I interpret it as someone close is going away and moving on with their lives, and getting somewhere. And the person singing has dreams, but they're fading from view because the possibilities just don't seem there. So this person they're close to, they asked for the person leaving to remember them when they're famous, but their relationship is failing because it's getting to their head. But this person still has hope that they can keep a relationship.
