Not necessarily him personally, but maybe inspired by the experiences of other users whom sought religion and, as the lyrics suggest, got no help. Instead of being uplifted, they felt put down, judged, and ultimately saw through the lies (ignorant, indignant promises made in vain). Religion is very good at making people feel like shit and kicking them when their already down. Oh and it also doesn't help that there's no god to start with, but that's just my opinion... each to their own.
