@nergal It is only my opinion and I am probably wrong.
On one of the live recordings Stipe clearly sings 'March could be darker' twice and in other versions he uses two separate words with the other being 'Porch' so I guess he is inconsistent with the lyrics.

In the rough mix it does indeed sound like he is singing, "The baaarrrrrn..." but then it ends with a 'ch' sound so it cannot be.

What they are hunting I have no idea but I feel sorry for it.

No, I think you are right. He does sing it a bit like "BORCH" and "BARSH" but that's just Michael being Michael. I thought I could solve it logically but alas not.

Correction.
The song references slingshots ("hand catapults") and TV. There's no "darker March." It goes
BUSH Could be target BARN Could be target
Catapult . . .
Because the image is boys shooting at stuff with slingshots.
@nergal Looks like it should be right but it's definitely 'darker'

@nergal The word definitely has an 'r' sound at the end and 'target' has a 't' sound.

I assumed it getting dark was connected to the mention of it being 9 O' Clock.

Sounds legit then. I think I made this comment before I started using Audacity. I can hear it a lot better now.

The porch could be darker, because the kids don't want to come in. Why could "the march" be darker?
