It's a relationship which went wrong for some reason.
Both of them were engaged, they loved each other, but something's not right; they are willing to change, but doesn't get any better("We never talk when we fall apart")..
So they broke up, but still want to keep contact; not as friends, not as a couple: just ex-lovers who in reality are not honest to each other, pretending they are living it well("we pretend we're okay, surrounding ourselves [...] with so called friends").
The first verse is actually just how the narrator remembers a few good moments("I try to understand How we could forget We made a promise to one another That nothing would ever break what we had").
On the chorus, the narrator misses them being together, he hates that new situation, knowing that both of them love each other but just can't stay together somehow("I know we got used to new us, but I don't want to be there, where we are").
2nd verse: Both of them know they could try their chances elsewhere("all the doors unlocked") but they both know they've hurt each other("Silence fallen between, [...] and the words unsaid")but somehow this so-called "friendship" at the moment is the only way both of them can still talk to each other without having to let go of their emotions("Started to keep ourselves at a distance that we could control").
As for the title; I'd say it's about couples who have the ability to read their partners/ex-partner's feelings, even when that partner wants to hide them.
Now not sure I'm making a lot of sense, but worth a try really.
Beautiful melody, but maybe a bit too dramatic for my taste nowadays.
