Religion and philosophy are not the same. She's comparing the two. She describes religion in positive ways and philosophy in negative ways. "Religion is a light in the fog" is a line (among the others) that clearly describes religion positively. She's saying philosophy leads one astray while religion saves.

@DeanQOTSA light bounces in the fog; it just makes things confusing and hard to see. that's why they recommend not to have high beams when driving in fog.

@DeanQOTSA Hmmm, I don't get that at all. If she's contrasting one to the other, then she's also saying that religion is shallow and insubstantial (a light in the fog), like herself, and begging us to croak her before she gets into the dangerous depths (slippery rocks) of philosophy.

But I think she's just written an anti-90's anti-intellectual screed
