To me it seems to be a story of love.

I think the first verse is about breaking up with her ex. She knew she didn't want to be in the relationship so she broke up because she would rather people gossip about her than be trapped in a relationship that wasn't right.

She is still broken up about losing the person as a friend and she feels that she isn't good enough for anyone. But she moves on and finds someone knew. Someone that can save her from the darkness and stop her from feeling sad about her mistakes.

But the release that comes when you're in mid fall...
Because she doesn't feel she deserves anyone, she shouldn't allow anyone to fall (dive) in love with her so feels like she is breaking the rules (losing her innocence) in doing so.
