were down by the pond
Looking for something
to plant in the lawn.
Out in the fields they
were turning the soil

When I look through the windows
and out on the road
They're bringing me presents
and saying hello.
Maybe Neil's childhood memory: His mother and father burying his pet somewhere in the field, and then coming back and trying to cheer him up. Maybe simple explanation, but I picture it that way.
