As far as the first verse, I'd say I think it's more about building yourself up and making progress only to ruin it by doing something that, while fun, isn't smart (in this case, buying and smoking pot). And knowing that every time you do that, you end up in a worse spot than you started (digging yourself out a hole).
I think the second verse relates back to "I love your eyes, the way they look when you're uncomfortable", as in it's the same person (but different than the person in the chorus). She doesn't approve and the whole thing makes her uncomfortable. When she finds out what he did, she leaves to avoid a huge argument, hence the door "sounding" (slamming). People usually slam doors when they're leaving an argument to make a point about how they feel.
