I think it's got to do with her being the odd-one-out in ballet cause she didn't have many friends or something. she also doesn't have the "perfect" figure so she had many self-confidence issues as a young teen (12-16 years). But she was good at ballet so I guess people thought her life was all perfect (with her parents being rich and all) but inside, she had a lot of problems!
I think maybe Little Mary is kinda like her alter-ego where her life goes towards a darker way than hers- she commits suicide!
but vanessa carlton found her haven through music and now she's a musical artist!!.. .. . though her career is going nowhere-near as successful as it used to...
