It is obvious that a lot of people think about religion when reading the lyrics, but I think that's not what Matt's aiming for here. I think he is warning us for literal interpretations of religion (extremism) and not all religion. Plus, manufactured god reminds me more of Stalin and Hitler deceiving the people into believing that they were magnificent and very capable leaders, if not gods. He is warning us for blind believes.
