I see this song as being about a child who's parents are divorced or are divorcing and who have abused the child.
"The sea said good bye to the shore so the sun wouldn't notice"
is saying how the mother/ father (sea) is saying good bye to the other (shore) as in a divorce.
"The carpet on my cheek" is the child being knocked down by the parent hitting or pushing them and "With your hands chasing me" is the parent's hand hitting, touching, violating, or abusing the child
"A little dream of mine, a little nightmare of yours" the child dreams of running away or leaving for a better life while the parent does not want that to happen for fear of the child telling about the abuse, or simple because the parent's twisted version of love is already being displayed.
"and be the better man" is the child not being like his parents "To be a better man" is the child's dream again, wishing to leave and become something greater.
"So love me mother, love me father, and love my sister as well" is what the child wants to say to the parents. the child wants to be loved and safe as well as his/er sister and brother.
"the cats silouhette as big as a monster" is saying that the child must see their parent, a being who should be emotional, loving and caring as a monster who is the opposite.
"so make your last demands for i will forsake you and I'll meet your eyes for the very first time, for the very last" is the child saying say one last thing to me and make it good and I will forgive you only because I'm not turning back.
"I met a man today and he smiled back at me now there are thoughts like these that keep me on my feet" Is the child, not speaking of the dream but of the things that keeps him/her going even small things like a stranger smiling or a glimmer of hope.
I think there are many messages to take away from this but two being don't judge people or act upon judgement because you never really know what goes on behind closed doors and always be nice and polite to others because whether it be a bad day, or a bad long term situation, small things really do help.
@m0rganme0w Sloom is by far my favorite song from OMAM and I have always thought about the verse with "The carpet on my cheek..." as a sexual encounter... how weird lol

@m0rganme0w I wasn't really sure about the divorce (maybe because my own aren't) but was listening just now after having make a final decision cut my mum off my life and it resonated a similar feeling to me. I was abused badly btw by both my parents and their neglect also led to really bad child abuse
