The song is about the book "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson. I think the song is mainly referring to the scene of the Blackwood Manor fire, as the lines "She's out of sight, he's out of mind" and "she's out of touch, he's of time" is a direct reference to Constance, who hid from the angry villagers during the fire with her sister Mary, and their cousin Charles, who was pretty much going mad at the scene of the fire since it was all his fault. "The poisoned nights" refers to the night of the murders that happened 6 years prior to the events of the book, when somebody had slipped arsenic in the sugar bowl.

It's a great song and a great book. TBM did such an awesome job captivating the scene of the fire in the song. :)
